Ronnie Best, superstar, just doesn't have the same ring

There's only one Georgie Best was an anthem that rang out from the terraces wherever the footballing genius played. But it nearly wasn't true, for the Belfast boy was first registered as Ronald Samuel Best. It was only a fortnight later that the name was officially changed to George.

Would Best have found fame - and become an enduring object of desire to so many female fans - had his original names stuck?

Certainly, it would have caused the terrace choirs great difficulty in coming up with a memorable chant. The words there's only one Ronald Samuel Best just would not have fitted the image of the playboy superstar!
