Sam Thompson Bridge a triumph of the imagination
The success of the Sam Thompson Bridge at Victoria Park in east Belfast is a triumph for those who built it, and a fitting tribute to the man after whom it was named.
Sam Thompson was a native of the area, a shipyard worker, and a trade unionist and playwright who helped to highlight the sectarianism of earlier years, especially in his play Over The Bridge.
He was a communicator, and it is apt that the bridge, which is a year old, is also helping to provide tangible communication for the people who live in the area or travel there for work or recreation. It is good to see this part of the city being regenerated in this way.
