'Satanic Islam' sermon pastor James McConnell's prosecution appears a peculiar one

Editor's Viewpoint

This newspaper has consistently opposed anyone spreading messages of hate or attempting to intimidate others. However, the case of Pastor Jack McConnell and his outspoken comments on the Muslim faith is of a different character. His controversial description of Islam appears grounded in his own sincerely held Christian beliefs.

He apologised to local Muslims for his words but was not prepared to accept an informal warning from police and is now being prosecuted on a somewhat peculiar charge.

Whatever the outcome of the case, many will have sympathy with what they see as a principled stand rather than hate-mongering.
