When SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie wears a poppy this Sunday at a remembrance service in Downpatrick it will be the first time that a nationalist leader in Northern Ireland has recognised what once was regarded here as a controversial emblem.
Of course it symbolises the sacrifice of all who died in all conflicts irrespective of creed or political adherence and Ms Ritchie is recognising maturing attitudes in this province.
She should be applauded for her decision to wear a poppy.
