Sense and the city
Many people may have raised an eyebrow or two when Londonderry was awarded the UK City of Culture title. But on the evidence to date is has certainly shown a much better example than Belfast on how to respect and advance cultures. The All-Ireland Fleadh has been a huge success, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and providing great entertainment.
On more traditional issues, the city has once again managed to negotiate the marching season with a mixture of tolerance and good sense. There is a republican dissident threat in the background in Derry, but that has not stopped the city being an example of what a new, inclusive Northern Ireland could be like, with people making a virtue out of their cultures, rather than a weapon.
