Shops have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas
Has climate change gone to the heads of some retailers. For a couple of outlets in the Newtownabbey area have launched their Christmas displays before September is over and with Halloween still to come. It seems the seasons have been mixed up. Obviously there is a market for festive fare, otherwise hard-headed businesses would not waste time trying to drum up custom. Yet for most of us it seems a little bizarre to be even thinking of Christmas at this juncture.
We used to regard a surprise present or windfall as Christmas coming early. With Selfridges in London opening its Christmas shop on July 31, the phrase has lost all meaning.
