Signs good Open will be ours sooner than later

It was the worst kept secret in sport, but it was finally confirmed yesterday. Royal Portrush is to become a venue for The Open, the most prestigious event in golf.

It should, according to First Minister Peter Robinson, mean a £70m bonanza for the local economy, but there are several important elements to be finalised yet.

One is when the event will come to the north west. It could be as early as 2019, but that is not yet certain. How much work is required before the course and surrounding area is thought to be suitable to stage The Open? The course will be partially redesigned and the local infrastructure will need to be upgraded. But given the enthusiasm of local people for the event, the signs are good that The Open will be held here sooner rather than later.
