Stressed teachers being let down by our politicians
Our report on the number of teachers taking time off due to stress or depression should set alarm bells ringing in the Department of Education - except there is no minister there to hear them and devise policies which might mitigate the pressure the profession is facing.
Unions paint a bleak picture of life in our schools, including lack of funding to cope with additional burdens in the classroom and disputes over pay.
A demoralised profession can only impact negatively on pupils. Education is a cornerstone of society and must be protected as far as possible, instead of being another victim of political squabbling.
