The Open will yield much more than a financial dividend
Confirmation that the Open Golf Championship is to come to Royal Portrush in 2019 is a huge endorsement of the status of the sport in Northern Ireland, and also the ability of the club to host the most prestigious tournament in the game.
With the organisers saying that the tournament brings in revenue of £50-70million over a year to the area where it is staged, Northern Ireland could be in for a welcome economic boost. Even more important, providing that the tournament runs smoothly, is the positive image of the province which will be beamed around the world. Money cannot buy that.
