There is no justifiable reason for Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly to sue the Chief Constable Matt Baggott over the incident which saw the politician carried for a short distance on the front of a police vehicle he was attempting to stop. Mr Kelly admitted he was in the wrong on that occasion.

So why is he – a member of the Policing Board – now taking legal action?

The suspicion is that this has less to do with the pursuit of justice – but ultimately more to show hard-line elements in the area he represents that his republican credentials have not withered in spite of the party's support for policing.
