Throw the book at criminals who prey on the elderly
Crimes against the elderly are among the most despicable imaginable. It seems that thugs are deliberately targeting pensioners in Northern Ireland, with two violent attacks recorded every week last year.
It is easy to understand why elderly people are targets. They are vulnerable, in many cases living in remote areas, and are less able to defend themselves. They may be more likely to keep large sums of money in their homes.
But theft is not the only crime. In one in three cases, the elderly people suffered injury. Those who commit such crimes have no place in our society and police must be given the information to put them behind bars.
