Time for loyalists to walk the walk, not just talk the talk
The leaders of loyalist paramilitary groups, the UDA, UVF and Red Hand Commando have pledged to eschew all violence and criminality. It is a laudable statement and one which people living in areas under their control will welcome warmly.
But a province weary with the double talk of republican and loyalist paramilitary spokesmen will await evidence of this new commitment before passing judgment. Hopes of a truly peaceful, normal society have been dashed too often. This is a golden opportunity for loyalists to come in from the cold politically and they should grasp it. Otherwise they will remain beyond the pale.
