True friendship proves to be a real lifesaver for Matt

A friend in need is a friend indeed, says the old adage, and there can be no better example of it than that provided by Londonderry pensioner Toby Gallagher.

When his lifelong fishing pal Matt Deehan fell into the River Faughan, Toby held his head above the turbulent waters for an hour until help arrived and got the two men back to the riverbank.

That was a remarkable feat by a 79-year-old. Obviously, the strength of his grip mirrored the strength of his friendship with, and concern for, Matt.

The two men have spent years fishing the rivers around Derry and Donegal and thankfully both will still be able to cast a line for years to come.
