TV masterminds

A theme tune like an out-take from Jaws; the terrifying black leather chair; the spotlight's pitiless gaze. Little wonder that Mastermind's inventor - ex-PoW Bill Wright - drew inspiration for the televisual ordeal from his interrogation at the hands of Hitler's secret police. The search for contestants for the next series reached Belfast yesterday to be met by a queue of would-be victims. Magnus Magnusson has long been replaced by the Today programme's resident Torquemada, John Humphreys. Yet no matter how smart you think you are, it's a lot easier to remember the answers when you're sitting on the sofa at home.
