UTV Live axing should not be start of news gathering cuts

UTV had a well-deserved reputation for local programming and it is disappointing that its new owner, ITV, is preparing to end its award-winning UTV Live Tonight programme which gave serious late night treatment to the news of the day.

On the credit side there will be a new weekly hour-long political programme hosted by much-respected veteran broadcaster Paul Clark. However, there is more than politics to the life of the province and it would be a retrograde step if this axing is the beginning of a retrenchment on news gathering here.

Regional identity is important and must be maintained through quality programming.
