UUP call to axe eyesore election posters worth considering

The UUP suggestion that all parties should voluntarily agree not to erect election posters during the run-up to the Assembly poll in May is certainly worthy of discussion.

They are an eyesore in many instances and, although the parties are supposed to remove then 14 days after the polls close, they often remain to become tattered on lampposts.

In 2014 the parties agreed to remove posters along the route of Giro d'Italia cycle race in the province without any harm to the democratic process. Many of the faces which will adorn billboards and lampposts in the coming months are already over-familiar without having to view them greater than life-size.
