Van Morrison is a fitting recipient of the Freedom of Belfast. Even the warring politicians in the City Hall agreed on that in a rare show of unanimity.
For several decades he has been a global singing star and a huge influence on others within the industry.
He truly is a fine ambassador for the province as a whole, never mind his native city.
The idea of presenting him with the honour at a concert is also a good one, given that he is notoriously averse to public engagements outside of his performances. That would be an opportunity for many people to pay tribute to him. But whenever he gets the Freedom, there is little likelihood that he will ever be seen exercising one of its rights – herding sheep across the Albert Bridge.
