The world of television comedy and satirical writing has lost a major figure with the death of Caroline Aherne from cancer at the age of just 52.

Her work to create such series as The Royle Family and The Mrs Merton Show established her as a national treasure, but sadly she faced her own personal battles, including cancer.

Caroline had the knack of asking leading questions on the The Mrs Merton Show, such as that to George Best about his drinking, which he laughed at too. It is the mark of a true comedian to be able to bring humour to the saddest and most sensitive situations. She will be sadly missed.
