Why we should make so much more of our sporting heroes
George Best still has global appeal even a decade after his death. Our exclusive story on the mystery of his birth name - he was noted as Ronald Samuel Best on his birth certificate - was picked up around the world. The publicity also helped us to solve the mystery - apparently his parents thought the original name was a bit of a mouthful and changed it quickly to George.
This story begs the question: do we make enough of our sporting heroes? We laud them when they win and we are proud of them in that quiet, understated Northern Ireland way.
But should we not use their status to sell the province as somewhere great also?
