Wi-fi hits the beach

Can there be a more depressing thought than to be sitting on the beach surrounded by scores of people working on laptops, tablets or smartphones?

For that is the future on Portrush's famous strands which will have free wi-fi coverage from today. Surely beaches are for relaxing on and the only rays you want come from the sun?

There are already enough ways to stay connected without spreading the net even wider. What we want is the occasional place where one can be alone with his or her thoughts, a place where we cannot be interrupted by modern technology. Why go to the beach if the only surfing you want is on the net?

Sadly the tide of technology is as unstoppable today as the waves were for King Canute.
