Writers' lives are over, but their powerful words live on
During the weekend there was sad news about the deaths of two outstanding men of words and letters.
John Montague, one of our finest poets, and AA Gill, the acerbic yet highly-talented restaurant and television critic and writer, are now silent, but their work will live on.
AA Gill was noted for his sometimes brutal honesty, but he also had a deep humanity towards those in need.
Mr Gill also wrote movingly about the cruel illness he suffered, and about his impending death. There is something noble about someone who can do this. Both men represented the power and the passion of the written word, and their passing is deeply felt.
