Zero tolerance approach to sex crimes sentencing needed

A man aged 31 who raped a grandmother of 53 in a Belfast car park has had his nine-year sentence reduced by two years on appeal.

The judge said there had been no gratuitous violence, there was no serious risk of reoffending, and that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crime.

No doubt the ruling was within legal guidelines, but on reading the details, most people will believe that these badly need to be changed. What about the terror and continuing trauma of victims like this unfortunate lady? The law needs to send out a clear and resounding message of zero tolerance regarding sexual crimes.
