Eoghan Quigg was man enough to cry

By Maureen Coleman
Wednesday, 10 December 2008

Eoghan Quigg’s public display of affection for fellow contestant Diana Vickers has been the cause of some division between the sexes.

While many of the men I know feel slightly embarrassed by his uncontrollable crying and his declarations of love, my female friends all agree that it tugged at our heartstrings.

I am not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear when the teenage boy ran onto the stage and hugged the object of his affection. Plenty of my friends and colleagues confessed that they cried a bit as well.

It was such an uncontrolled display of emotion that my heart really went out to him. There can be no denial now from Eoghan that he’s not smitten with the Blackburn girl — actions speak so much louder than words.

To be honest, I’m not particularly surprised that his behaviour made some men feel uncomfortable — it’s not the macho thing to do to wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve — but I have been shocked at the reaction of one or two female columnists, who lambasted him for being a crybaby.

To those who criticised his actions on Saturday night, I’d like to remind them that he’s a 16-year-old boy who’s probably in the throes of first love, even it it is unrequited. I remember what I was like at that age, and it was all high drama and intensity. (Some would say things haven’t changed.) Dismiss his feelings as puppy love if you like, but at that age, you believe it’s real.

Over the past few months Eoghan has come out onto that stage each week in a confident manner, showing maturity way beyond his years.

While other contestants have cracked under pressure and let nerves get the better of them, Eoghan has been a consistent performer. There were no tales of heart-break or woe, no stories of struggling against the odds, he just got on with the job in hand.

What I believe happened on Saturday night wasn’t just about Diana Vickers, but the combination of weeks of mounting tension, relief at getting through to the final and heartache that his “best friend” was leaving the show.

Only a heartless cynic would suggest that his hysterical outburst could win him more votes — anyone watching the show will know that there was nothing staged about those relentless tears.

Can you imagine standing on that stage facing 12 million viewers, waiting to hear a result which could turn your life upside down? Having talked to him about what happened, I know now that he was resigned to the fact that he was heading home, so convinced was he Diana was going through.

His first reaction was one of sheer relief — and then the cold reality of the situation hit home. Diana, his best friend, his confidante, his first love perhaps, was leaving. And after weeks of holding it all together, the emotion finally got the better of him.

This does not mean Eoghan is too childlike to cope with fame. It doesn’t mean that he’ll fall apart should his single not go to number one or his record label decide to drop him. It just means he is a young boy dealing with a very adult situation — and dealing with it admirably.

So give the kid a break, I say. He’s not afraid to show his feelings and I think that’s a pretty admirable quality in a bloke.

Eoghan obviously comes from a very close knit family where there’s a lot of love and affection.

If it is the case that he and Diana Vickers have got together, then I have to say, she’s a very lucky girl.

Why Church must confess all for sake of my abused friend

Robert Fisk: Democracy doesn't seem to work when countries are occupied by Western troops
