Fionola Meredith (Comment, May 13) regards abortion as a “fundamental” human right and Ireland’s abortion laws as “barbaric”.

However, abortion is not a right and is not included as one in any human rights treaty; on the other hand, the right to life of all human beings is.

As to “barbaric”, the word is barely adequate to describe what happens to a child when it is ripped from his or her mother’s womb; and it is these barbarous practices which our abortion laws are designed to prevent.
