Abortion proposal not a Trojan horse

Published 25/02/2016

In response to Mark Williams' letter (Write Back, February 23), to allege that a recent amendment brought by my colleague Trevor Lunn MLA and I in relation to terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormality was a Trojan horse is disingenuous at best, disgraceful at worst.

There was no subterfuge involved, but rather an open and honest attempt to update the current law to fulfil a promise to Sarah Ewart following an extensive consultation by the Department of Justice, so no one else would have to experience the same heartbreaking circumstances she did.

Mr Williams' assertion that abortion is about conscience is correct. I would ask those who similarly promised Sarah progress on this issue only to renege on their word have a look at their own consciences following their actions.
