Addressing the issue of youth unemployment

Published 16/02/2016

Democracy First welcomes the Prince's Trust announcement reminding us as a community of the travesty of youth unemployment in Northern Ireland.

That it has doubled over the last 10 years to 21,000 in respect of 18 to 24-year-olds is an indictment of the failed policies of successive Executives.

I write not only as the leader of Democracy First, but as vice-chair of a local youth ministry and development manager of a social enterprise providing support for these young people.

I can only express my dismay at the notional support provided by some elected representatives in promoting the efforts of those in their local communities seeking to help others.

If elected to the Assembly, Democracy First will be wholly supportive of the Prince's Trust's call for a joint ministerial working group to address the issue.

Leader, Democracy First
