Aid system is part of the problem

In a recent interview, Bono spoke bluntly of the damage corruption wreaks in the developing world. He said: "We see corruption as a bigger killer than HIV/Aids, malaria and TB put together."

I have been saying this for years. Massive amounts of aid intended for vaccination programmes, medical centres, clinics, food and water provision are misused by officials in the developing world every year.

There is no way around this problem other than to radically change the method of aid disbursal. It is essential that stringent oversight measures be put in place to police every pound and ensure maximum value for money.

If we persist with our present approach, money will continue to be misappropriated and people will keep dying as a direct result.
