Air museum visit left me on a high

Published 21/05/2015

As a patient in Belfast's Mater Hospital for the last seven months following cancer surgery, my 54th birthday was on May 8 - the VE Day anniversary.

I was surprised and delighted when my wife Anne and sister Pamela arranged a personal tour of the aircraft collection at the Ulster Aviation Society in the grounds of the old Maze Prison.

I felt like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, and to sit in the newly-acquired Spitfire almost reduced me to tears.

Thanks to all, especially Ray Burrows, chairman, and Fred Jennings, commander-in-chief of the radio display room, for one of the most special days of my life.

I urge everyone to visit and support this amazing museum.
