Airport plans must take flight

If ever proof was needed that an extended runway at Belfast City Airport was required, it was the recent volcanic ash disruption which highlighted our vulnerability as an island.

Belfast City Airport has promised new European routes if the runway extension is granted.

Better access equals increased tourism, which in turn supports my family's livelihood.

Casual observers point to Belfast International Airport as the hub for new routes.

But it's clear that there is no appetite among airlines to offer these services from Aldergrove.

It's time our politicians woke up to the cold economic facts.

They need to support the extension and the beleaguered tourism industry in Northern Ireland, rather than simply pandering to a vocal minority of residents in that area.
