Alas, TV fees are a necessary evil
I WOULD have to agree with 'Not a BBC fan' (Writeback March 29) that sentencing in courts (for non-payment of TV license fees) these days seems a bit bizarre. But has the writer ever thought about how much (s)he pays for all the commercial channels?
With TV adverts on hundreds of digital channels to be paid for, heaven knows how much of your weekly shop is actually going to pay for your 'free' TV channels which wouldn't actually exist without adverts.
If the BBC was to rely on advertising, either supermarket bills would go up to pay for even more adverts, or funding would be moved to advertise on the BBC rather than lesser watched channels whose viewers number in the hundreds - leading to the demise of those channels. Let's face it, we're all going to pay one way or another.
