All but one of the apostles were married
In light of the furore and subsequent silencing of Fr Brian D'Arcy regarding his views on a celibate clergy in the Roman Catholic faith, it is interesting to note that all but one of the apostles were married men. The exception was St John.
When St Paul wrote his epistle to Timothy, he exhorted him as follows regarding bishops: 'It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober and prudent.' (First Letter to Timothy 3:2).
Perhaps Fr D'Arcy is lucky he didn't live in the time of the astronomer Gallileo, who was threatened with torture if he didn't recant his madcap view that the earth went round the sun and not the other way around.
