Alliance Party addressing double-jobbing concerns

I am writing in relation to a letter in Write Back on Wednesday, June 9 entitled 'We need a cull of our MLAs'. I wish to address some of the issues raised.

With respect to 'double-jobbing', your correspondent, 'Panorama', will be delighted to know that Naomi Long, having pledged to stand down as an MLA, will be doing so once the formalities of selecting a new candidate are completed. Following that, a process will then be undertaken to select a replacement for Naomi at Belfast City Council.

Naomi has delivered a positive, new form of politics and she earned her support in East Belfast through her strong and consistent record of constituency work and no doubt those who will work alongside her in these roles will do the same.

With respect to concerns about the number of Assembly members, the Alliance Party is committed to reducing the number of MLAs at Stormont and also wants to review the number of government departments here to try and deliver efficiencies.

We will continue to push for these changes to ensure that more money goes into providing improved frontline services for the public.
