Appeal for Hilden school memories

Published 28/09/2015

I am a former teacher from Hilden Primary School near Lisburn which sadly closed in 2008.

The Barbour family, who founded Hilden Mill, had provided education for their workers since the 1820s.

The present school was built by them in 1913 and remained under their trusteeship to a greater or lesser degree until just after the millennium.

A former pupil and school governor, Mrs Ann Ferguson, and I are hoping to put together a book about the school and its place in the community.

We are inviting former teaching and ancillary staff, as well as pupils, to provide their memories of their time at Hilden.

Especially important would be photographs, with the owners' permission to have them printed, if we can get enough material for a publishable book.

If you are contributing to the project, please make sure that you enclose a return address for acknowledgement and return of photographs. Everything will be appreciated.

Memories can be posted to Mrs Ann Ferguson, 7 East Downview, Low Road, Lisburn BT27 4UW, or Miss M Hawthorne, 12 Fairview Park, Dunmurry BT17 9HL or you can email margaret
