Armagh firmly in Ireland

Stella Wilson (Write Back, September 6) quotes Winston Churchill as follows: “England became finally one coherent kingdom based on Christianity”.

In her first paragraph she calls “our nation” Britain and, at the end, she gives her address as Co Armagh.

Churchill also mentions St Patrick, the Romanised Briton who converted the pagan Irish to Christianity in the fifth century and established his primary see in Armagh, which is still the primal city of most Christian denominations in Ireland, including the Church of Ireland.

Stella may consider her nation to be Britain, but when it comes to Christianity in “these islands”, Armagh is very much part of Ireland; it is not in Britain.
