Assad not the monster British seek to portray

Published 04/12/2015

David Cameron says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has carried out a slaughter of his own people.

According to the Syrian Observatory, when the death toll in Syria reached 100,000, 45% of the dead were Assad's soldiers as opposed to only 15% rebels.

Another group counting the number of deaths in Syria is the Violations Documentation Centre. It estimated (in December 2014) that 108,000 "revolutionary martyrs" had been killed.

According to a recent BBC report, Assad is giving asylum to 1.6 million internally displaced Syrian refugees in the city of Latakia, who are well looked after.

According to the journalist Patrick Cockburn, Assad has attacked areas held or contested by rebels. That is not the same thing as attacking civilians.

David Cameron must address this issue when instigating his aerial bombing campaign in Syria.
