Assembly needs its numbers cut
I NOTE the issue of the number of Stormont MLAs has been in the news of late. I have looked at the number of legislators in the Scottish parliament and Welsh assembly in relation to their populations. That is, 129 MSPs for 5.3m Scots and 60 AMs for 3.1m Welsh.
There are about 1.8m here, and using an average number of constituents per legislator from the Scottish and Welsh figures we should have about 40 MLAs. So, how come we have 108 MLAs and cautious discussions about how we might reduce it to 90? Time for a clear-out?
