Attitude to basic human rights will return to haunt us

Published 12/02/2016

You cannot help smelling a rat about the tabling of new legislation on abortion at this time.

If we had proper respect for the European Convention on Human Rights — as surely we of all people ought to — we would wait a little longer until our courts decide what the convention means for abortion in Northern Ireland.

After all, the appeal against Justice Horner’s recent judgment on the matter is not far off. It seems that MLAs want to decide the issue regardless of the courts.

What goes around comes around. MLAs’ pick-and-mix attitude to basic human rights will inevitably return to haunt them — and us all — in the end.
