Avoniel primary has something to offer families

Published 27/08/2015

I was extremely interested in the proposed closure of Avoniel school, my old primary of many happy memories.

At the same time I was deeply grieved that this could come to fruition as I believe it still has a future for families of young children living in the area. It has facilities to accommodate play areas for those who have not access to parks nearby. I recall that swings in the school grounds were a popular pastime for children to play safely, some within eyesight of their homes surrounding the school area.

I remember clearly the time Belfast City Council decided to close the school grounds and tie up the swings on a Sunday. This was a shameful decision made by council members. I know most of these members had swings in their large gardens but obviously due to their "beliefs" thought nothing of depriving needy children of their enjoyments. I hope the decision to close this important amenity will have sympathetic consideration.
