Bear facts on animal culling
Friday, 19 December 2008
In response to the criticism of the bear fur hats worn by the Guards regiments, the British Fur Trade Association (BFTA) would like to correct some statements made in your article (Belfast Telegraph, December 15).
First of all, we would like to make you aware that black bears are not killed to provide fur for ceremonial caps.
The bear fur is a by-product of a necessary cull.
In North America black
bears are abundant. In areas where black bears and humans live in close proximity, black bears must be managed and controlled under government authorisation.
There are strict regulations on how the animal is killed as part of a necessary cull.
The BFTA strongly condemns cruelty to animals and does not trade in endangered species.

Yet again other species of the animal kingdom have to suffer because of man's encroachment into the bear's territory. It is about time, man, the supposedly most intelligent species on this planet should learn how to live WITH other species intead of trying to destroy them simply because we think we have a right to live where we choose at the expense of other species. Makes me ashamed to be human the way my species carries on at times.

"The BFTA strongly condemns cruelty to animals"
Oh please, farmed-fur - which the BFTA supports - IS cruelty to animals.
