Benedict shows real qualities in resignation

Published 15/02/2013

The qualities I admire in Pope Benedict XIV came together with his surprise announcement.

Awareness: aware of his deteriorating health he announced: "I haven't the strength to efficiently carry on with my office."

Determination: his admission showed his determination to face up to his position, breaking tradition as the first Pope to voluntarily stand down in nearly 600 years.

Responsibility: that endless sense of responsibility towards Vatican teaching and his simplicity in dealing with a global brotherhood made him a shining star.
