Better buses and trains now

I was interested to see figures from a recent survey showing that train use in Northern Ireland increased by 12% between 2007 and 2008.

Improving public transport is necessary, now more than ever, given the effects of the economic downturn.

The Stormont Executive should be looking to improve bus and train services and take a green approach to deal with the impact of the downturn.

More people are using services, so increased frequency could boost this usage further.

The economic downturn has forced people to use cheaper transport options. Many are trying to use their car less, so public transport is an area which must be expanded to meet the extra demand.

There is a genuine opportunity for better public transport here, and an opportunity to start addressing some effects of the tough economic times through environmentally-sound projects.

The Executive must not miss this opportunity.
