Bin collection mess needs to be sorted now

THE bare minimum we, as Belfast ratepayers, expect from the council is that the streets are clean.

The recent move to fortnightly bin collection and the issuing of myriad new recycling bins to streets in the Lower Malone area means Belfast City Council is not even delivering on this measure.

The one-size-fits-all recycling and bin-collection policy is wholly unsuited to an area of so much rented accommodation.

Overflowing bins are left out week after week, while open and split bin-bags litter the pavements. Moreover, recycling bins lie unused in alleyways and gardens.

Council officials have as much as admitted that it is unlikely these problems will be solved under the current scheme.

So, councillors, get this most basic of council duties sorted.
