British sovereignty is the real 'elephant'
In the course of his article (Comment, May 1), former Special Branch detective William Matchett stated: "Critics who claim shootings of this kind could have been prevented ignore the elephant in the room - a person not becoming a terrorist was the best preventative measure.
For the majority, this is where moral values (sic) greatly helped."
There is another "elephant". Britain created Northern Ireland and claims sovereignty over it. Irish people living here at the time were ignored. British sovereignty over Irish people has no legitimacy. British sovereignty prevents Irish people from exercising their right to govern themselves through their own national parliament.
Irish people live here as of right; British sovereignty is the intruder. British sovereignty over Irish people is foreign rule.
