Burnham pledge on NI candidates

Published 26/08/2015

Congratulations to Andy Burnham for doing the honourable thing and announcing that if he becomes Labour leader Labour candidates will be allowed to stand in Northern Ireland constituencies in UK general elections.

When the campaign for Labour representation was working to end this boycott some years ago it was actively supported by Alan Johnson, the leader of the Union of Communication Workers, Tam Dalyell and Jeffrey Dudgeon.

Since then the Conservative Party has been standing candidates and in the last election Ukip fielded an impressive number of candidates.

Let us hope that Yvette Cooper, Liz Kendall and Jeremy Corbyn are decent enough to endorse Mr Burham's promise.
