Candidates a credit to democratic system

Published 11/05/2016

I would like to thank all those who stood as candidates in the recent Assembly election. For a democratic system to function well it's important to have people from a variety of backgrounds putting themselves forward for election.

We were well-served by having such a variety of candidates from which to choose.

I would also like to thank the thousands of canvassers who knocked on doors and handed out leaflets on the streets. Everyone I came in contact with was polite rather than pushy, courteous rather than aggressive.

A healthy democracy needs people who are willing to give their time and energy to promoting their personal political philosophy in support of a particular candidate. We were well-served by all those activists and they also deserve our thanks.

We may or may not like the outcome of the election, but we certainly cannot blame the system, or those who sought to inform us and influence our votes.

Congratulations to all - winners and losers alike - for a job well done.
