Child abuse scandal was Ireland’s nightmare from hell
Saturday, 23 May 2009
Wednesday’s publication of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse reflects Ireland’s shameful holocaust.
The generals and the captains of the Department of Education and the Irish Catholic Church stood by and allowed our national nightmare from hell to happen.
This was our Nuremberg trial, Irish-style, with no names, no prosecution and no court appearances.
In a statement on the RTE Six One News, the Irish Christian Brothers expressed their sorrow and will now co-operate with the authorities.
It was the same Christian Brothers that sued the commission in 2004 to keep the identities of its members, dead or alive, unnamed in the report.
Justice has not been done as many of the abusers will never face the rigours of the law.
Shame on those that inflicted sheer cruelty, neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse that was perpetrated against Ireland’s children.
Lets us insist, as a caring people, that we never allow this to happen again.

Surely the Nuremburg trial had real accused, real convicts and real sentences....surely that is what needs to follow this report....if it doesnt, then letting the guilty go free and unpunished kinda excuses the excesses of their crimes and makes us all accomplices? or am i naive?

Good letter David. These people have disgraced the Roman Catholic church here and make one even ashamed to be Irish. The abusers must come before a court of law, anything less is unjust.

I'm don't quite understand this situation of anonymity. Is it a condition of their redress , that the victims have received compensation without being allowed to name the perpetrators of their abuse, independent of the Commission Report -surely not ! What have we got a free press for !

The Irish Catholic Church contravened the UN charter that children not be deprived of their liberty----that would include child slave labour, sex abuse--etc etc the shame of it all.
