Children's rights must come first

IT is an unquestionable fact that the people most vulnerable to abuse in any society are those helpless to defend themselves.

The people that come within this category are innocent children, followed by the elderly/infirm, along with the disabled.

I see that the Health Minister, Edwin Poots, is to challenge the Appeal Court's decision to allow gay people to adopt children.

The pros and cons of this issue revolve around the denial of gay people's human rights.

But what human rights has a child? Surely a child's best interests must come first. So I suggest that gay people who want to raise children should, rather, sponsor a child, giving financial support to allow him or her to be reared by a normal father and mother, in return for guaranteed access.
