Claims over ASD training incorrect

Published 12/10/2015

I WRITE in response to an online comment (October 8) made by Zara Bennett and printed in Write Back with regard to her perception of a lack of training for student teachers at Ulster University in awareness and understanding of ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders).

I wish to set Ms Bennett's mind at rest and assure her that whoever gave her this information is entirely incorrect.

PGCE students at Ulster experience a very full programme of teacher training around Special Educational Needs and this programme is delivered by well-qualified specialists and practitioners.

Understanding issues around ASD and approaching the support of young people is covered fully as part of the university's programme.
