Context is vital to understand past

Published 16/06/2015

The juxtaposition (DebateNI, June 11) of columns by Alex Kane and Nelson McCausland highlights the importance of context in discussing the Troubles.

Alex puts their onset down to a "very peculiar political, electoral, social, religious, constitutional, sectarian governing environment".

The historical context is one of an imploding British Empire as the Cold War raged.

Meanwhile, Nelson does some justice to Irish history by correctly pointing out that the 12th century Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland was preceded by their 11th century invasion of Britain, which in turn followed on the heels of other incursions from mainland Europe.
