Corporation tax devolution is the radical action Northern Ireland needs

When I happened upon Alasdair McDonnell’s observation that ‘radical action’ needed to be taken to redress our slowing rate of economic growth I thought that the SDLP might have had some form of Damascene moment.

For a moment I thought we may have been in agreement – we do need radical action, the radical action promised by corporation tax devolution is of course what Northern Ireland needs to get our economy moving properly.

I was disappointed when I read the rest of the article. If Dr McDonnell thinks that his potential strategy for dealing with childcare is going to help create more decent jobs for mothers to go into then he is sadly mistaken.

What we need is to create a competitive and attractive economic environment. Tampering around the edges won’t do that. Lower corporation tax will.
